VIGI-SCORE
TACTILE ALERT: A SENSORY DEVICE FOR PREVENTION OF ULCERS BY THE PATIENT
The device developed by Yohan Payan and his fellow researchers allows a patient with a motor handicap to receive a signal suggesting a change of posture to relieve areas of tissue suffering too much pressure. This new concept places the patient at the centre of the perception-action loop.» Description and functionalities
Buttock pressure pad connected to a device for signal reception and restitution by a tactile channel (e.g. vibration)» Technology
Integrated, embedded and communicating multimode sensors and actuators» Target
- Patients with spinal injuries- Diabetics affected by plantar ulceration and amputations
- Elderly and disabled persons
» Application areas
- Re-education, correction and functional replacement in cases of handicap» Laboratory

What are the technical advantages of your innovation?Existing systems for preventing bedsores have two major disadvantages:
(1) most of them are heavy and cumbersome (sometimes interfering with the exploratory movements and perceptive activities of the user), not fully integrated, due to being connected to a computer), and energy-consuming (independence forces batteries to be carried, which themselves are cumbersome and heavy).
(2) they send information in audio or visual form, thus requiring the user to pay permanent attention to the monitoring screen (audible or visible signal), and can prevent the perception and use of external audible or visible signals in simultaneously performing the tasks of daily life.
The technical advantage of our system is the result of developing integrated, embedded and communicating multimode sensors and actuators which meet the constraints of ecological validity, with devices which are ergonomically and aesthetically acceptable to users.
What are the economic advantages?
The medical and surgical treatment of ulcers is lengthy, complex and costly: failure to apply preventive practices generates significant extra cost in terms of longer hospitalisation, increased morbidity and aggravation of the cost of treatment. This makes the industrial application of our system important. Because of the technical advantages of the system, the target markets encompass re-education and/or rehabilitation centres (32 university hospitals in France) and the users themselves (at least 330,000 and 280,000 spinal injury patients in Europe and the USA respectively).
